A series of installations made with EEG and laser mandalas in various form factors over the years.
Adventures in Laser and EEG meditations is an artist talk about the EEG and laser meditation installations I have made over the years. I've used RGB laser projectors and multiple fixed lasers (as much as 60 in one installation), and multiple types of EEG headsets. I've made the installations based on traditional Tibetian mandalas and vague mandala like shapes that are informed primarily by the meditator's brainwaves. I've made them for one person to experience at a time, and as an entire space in which a party can be held and two people can control the environment.
For Relativity
An EEG and Biofeedback expanded 3-D mandala. The EEG connects with a synthesizer in this case rather than a pre-composed track.
For Relativity Feb 14 at Algorythm
Installation and performance I set up at Algorythm Collective in BK focusing on Light & Sound
controlled by Heart & Mind
For Relativity was a 3D Mandala made up of 60 lasers.
The outer cube had 12 lasers on each of its 6 sides and measured 16 feet in diameter.
The inner circle was 12 feet in diameter and contained 12 lasers
The object of focus, a gallery plinth with a heart sensor in the middle measured 1ftx1ftx3.5ft and had 12 lasers on it which would turn on and off with the beat of the visitors heartbeat illuminating the crystal in the middle of the structure.
The person in the middle would also wear a Muse headset, the output of which was mapped to a prophet 6 synthesiser outputting signals to QSC's in each of the 4 corners of the mandala like gates, immersing the visitor in their own biofeedback.
Relativity Too
The first heart and mind laser meditation installation I made in the Relativity series. Completed as part of my residency at the Holocenter on Governor’s Island. The installation has a heart sensor in the middle of the sacred circle to move the laser circle up and down over the mediator and it uses the mind input to control the speed of the atmospheric music around, music composed by Dima Markus. The mediation ring is composed of many of my favorite crystals on motors refracting laser light.
Relativity Five was presented at Spark Art Fair in New York City in the Toughtworks Arts booth. Relativity Five tracks visitor’s heartbeats and projects it in laser light across the space.
Laser Focus
Made with Sam Stowers at Mars.College 2022 analyzing a secret sauce of Gamma and Alpha waves, each wave is mapped to the jitteryness or size of a shape. This laser meditation station uses an Emotive rather than Muse headset and can detect weather or not the user is present in the loop to shut off the laser entirely as a safety precaution allowing for audience scanning and laser immersion which was very satisfying.
