grandma bread is a hollow and dried out piece of russian pumpernickel bread, containing the voice of my grandmother reciting her experience of the leningrad blockade. the leningrad blockade began on the 8th of september 1941 and ended on the 27 of january 1944. she recites her story in russian and english, softly from within the bread, symbol of life, last vestige of food, enshrined on the wall, like a domestic altar. her participation in the project is noteworthy, for not only did she consent to tell her story, but also to sacrifice a loaf of bread for art.
